The July/August holidays are the perfect time for reluctant readers to discover some good books and return to school ahead of their non-reading peers. Studies since the 1950s prove that students who read over the holidays return to school about four months ahead of their non-reading peers in reading comprehension.

Children should always choose their own reading material—as long as it is age-appropriate. Just like adults, children learn about great books because they hear about them. Movie tie-ins and books that connect to their interests are all good ways to encourage reading.

Here is a list of books I have found that connect to the most reluctant readers. All of the books are for average readers 12 and above. Students from ten to 12 will enjoy these books also, but might need an adult to help them read.
