When the THA’s Secretary for Tourism and Transportation Tracy Davidson-Celestine announced plans for a zip line installation costing $3 million at the post-executive council meeting last week, not much beyond the cost seemed very certain.

An assessment done on the project a month ago was referenced in vague terms and the length of the zip line and its unique selling points seemed even less clear. For a fast ride estimated to cost around $400 per person, more definitive research and greater clarity about the selling points of the attraction might seem to be warranted.

Ms Davidson-Celestine described Tobago as a “mature tourism destination,” and it wasn’t clear either whether that was a desirable thing for Tobago; but it’s obvious that the island needs to do more work to move beyond its traditional sales pitch of sun, sand and sea to explore more aspects of its natural beauty, cultural uniqueness and unquestionably rich history.
