National junior cyclist Akil Campbell displayed top form in the omnium event at the Junior Pan American Cycling Championships, breaking the national junior record in the junior men’s flying 250-metre race in Aguascalientes, Mexico, on Wednesday.
Campbell crushed Varun Maharajh’s 2010 record of 13.974 seconds, stopping the clock in 13.439 to finish second in the flying 250m race.
Campbell remains fifth overall in the omnium with 166 points. Campbell, who represents the Rigtech Sonics cycling club, still has an excellent chance to grab a medal with one event (points race) remaining in the omnium. Argentine Julio Gil and Chilean Nicholas Lopez are both on 170 points, narrowly ahead of Campbell.
The points race was carded to take place yesterday on the final day of the championships.
National female junior cyclist Keiana Lester just missed out on a medal, finishing fourth in the junior women’s sprint. Lester lost in the semifinal to Valentina Ocampo of Colombia.
Yesterday, Lester and another T&T cyclist Kollyn St George lined up in the junior women’s keirin.
