It really is amazing how in a small country as ours, there is such a high percentage of missing persons. Such a percentage should not exist at all. Once in Trinidad it is a known fact that you cannot hide, as you are sure to be spotted by some familiar face or associate. So then, can someone explain to me how so many young people are reported missing and cannot seem to be located?

Research worldwide has proven that social networking, while it may serve as a benefit to many, can also act to people’s detriment. The Cybercrime Bill seeks to clarify what is cybercrime and give in detail the punishment applicable if the crime is committed. Coincidentally, this action will aid nationals in more ways than one.

Since the People’s Partnership Government came into power, Secondary School students have been receiving laptops as a reward for being successful at the SEA exam. The intention was to use the device in order to assist with research for school assignments or for general research and knowledge. However, it has been discovered that youths are drastically becoming victims of cybercrime where adult men are holding conversations via Facebook or other chat lines.

In recent times there have been numerous instances of leaked footage showing students who are considered minors, using cell phone cameras and laptop cameras to record themselves in compromising positions or performing sexual or violent acts. What we need to pay attention to is that this is indeed a cybercrime once leaked or made public.

The Bill seeks to protect individuals from this type of embarrassment and exposure. It will put limitations on what people feel is acceptable to expose or post and it will definitely act as a deterrent to individuals. As a society we must be mindful that children live what they see, therefore we must portray positive images for them to emulate.
