When tomorrow starts without me and I’m not there to see;
If the sun should rise and find your eyes all filled with tears for me.
I wish so much you wouldn’t cry the way you did today;
While thinking of the many things we didn’t get to say
I know how much you love me as much as I love you;
And each time that you think of me, I know you will miss me too.
But when tomorrow starts without me please try to understand,
That an angel came and called my name and took me by the hand
But as I turned to walk away, a tear fell from my eye;
For all my life, I’d always thought I didn’t want to die.
So when tomorrow starts without me
For every time you think of me
Always remember I’m right here in your heart!

Ramdin was not axed from squad says source

Contrary to reports in some circles experienced wicketkeeper Denesh Ramdin was not dropped from the West Indies team for the proposed tour of Zimbabwe.

Information reaching CMC Sports indicates that the 30-year-old Test captain, was indeed picked in the squad which was due to play a tri-nation series with the hosts and Pakistan. The tournament was subsequently cancelled after Pakistan withdrew from the originally proposed dates of August 20 to September 3. The matches were to be played in Harare and Bulawayo.

A source indicated: “Ramdin was picked in the squad for the tournament. He was and still is the No 1 wicketkeeper in West Indies cricket team and will continue to play a key role in the ODI team with young captain Jason Holder at the helm.

“Yes, there was much discussion surrounding several members of the squad and the future of West Indies ODI cricket, for what was to be a crucial period...but to say that Ramdin was omitted is simply not true.”

With the tour of Zimbabwe off the West Indies’ next international assignment will be a full tour of Sri Lanka where they will play all three formats.

The West Indies last toured Sri Lanka in 2010-2011 where they drew the Test series and lost the ODI series.

...as Women’s championship bowls off
Published:
Monday, August 3, 2015
Sportification

T&T Red Force Divas will be counting on home advantage and well organised preparation to dethrone defending champions Jamaica when the West Indies Women’s Super50 championship bowls off on Thursday.

The region’s top female cricketers will not only representing their respective countries, but will also be addressing the regional selectors to be part of the West Indies team that is currently positioned third on ten points from nine games behind Australia (16 points) and South Africa (11 points) in the ICC ODI Championship.

Six teams will be vying for the coveted title. Defending champions Jamaica, host T&T, Barbados and Guyana will be joined by newcomers Windward Islands South Zone, WI (SZ) and Windward Islands North, WI (NZ).

The Windward Islands (SZ) comprise of the best players from Grenada, and St Vincent and the Grenadines, while the Windward Islands (NZ) will be pinning their hopes on the best players from Dominica and St Lucia.

The tournament will be on a round robin basis with the two top teams qualifying for the finals on August 16, at the National Cricket Centre (NCC) at Balmain, Couva.

All the championship matches will be played in Central Trinidad. Other than the NCC, Gilbert Park and Macaulay Park both in California and Exchange Recreation Ground, Couva will be used as match venues.

Practice sessions will be at the NCC, Macaulay Park and Inshan Ali Park, Preysal.

Defending champions Jamaica will be depending heavily on captain and West Indies vice-captain Stafanie Taylor to lead with both bat and ball.

Taylor is currently ranked 6th (657 points) in batting and 3rd (659 points) in bowling in the ICC top 10 ODI Women players.

She is currently the leading WI batter with 332 runs in 8 matches in the ODI Championship and has taken eight wickets at an average of 24.82.

Taylor will be hoping that fellow West Indies player Chinelle Henry, along with Jodian Morgan, Chedan Nation, Natasha McClean and Vanessa Watts provide the support required to remain as the region’s cricket queens.

Barbados led by West Indies player Shaquana Quintyne, will be turning to Deandra Dottin and Hayley Matthews to dominate the batting.

Dottin is currently ranked 9th (620 points) and has scored 310 runs in the ICC ODI Championship. All eyes will be on the very versatile Matthews given her stellar performances (debut tour) on the ill-fated series ‘Down Under’ in 2014.

To date in six matches at the ICC ODI Champions, Matthews has scored 261 runs and taken eight wickets at an average of 18.25.

The Knight sisters, Kycia and Kyshona, along with Shakera Selman and Shamilla Connell are also expected to lead the Bajan charge to wrest the title from Jamaica.

Guyanese’s charge as title contenders will come from captain and West Indies fast bowler Tremayne Smart and ably supported by fellow West Indies teammates Shemaine Campbelle and Subrina Munroe.

Smart is presently the second highest WI wicket taker (10) at an average 19.20 per wicket in the ICC ODI Championship.

Other key players include wicketkeeper and vice-captain Melanie Henry who plays her club cricket in Trinidad with national champions Preysal Phoenix.

The Windward Islands (NZ) will be led by fast bowler Yasmine St Ange and support is expected to come from fellow fast bowler Roylin Cooper, along with Paulina Francis, Aslene Edward, Krisani Irish and Swayline William.

Juliana Nero will lead the Windward Islands (SZ) and will be expecting West Indies player Afy Fletcher to provide outstanding all round performances with bat and ball. Fletcher along with Akeira Peters played their club cricket in Trinidad for Technocrats in 2015.

Cordel Jack and Shavorne Clarke experience will be important to lead the WI South Zone quest to cop the title in their debut year.

Host country, T&T Red Force Divas will be led by the most successful West Indies captain/wicket-keeper Merissa Aguilleira. West Indies players Britney Cooper and Stacey Ann King will be expected to lead the batting with support coming from Amanda Samaroo, Felicia Walters, Reniece Boyce and Shenelle Lord.

The fast bowling quartet comprises of Kirbynia Alexander, Leeann Kirby, Stephanie Ramcharan and Samantha Bissoon.

The spinning trio will be led by the number two ranked ICC ODI bowler Anisa Mohammed (672 points) who is currently the leading wicket taker in the ICC OCI Championship with 16 wickets at an average of 17.25. She will be supported by her twin sister Alisa Mohammed and Karishma Ramharack.

The pressure will be on the Red Force Divas playing at home and given the recent performance of the local CPL franchise, the Red Steel.

Overall the expectations are high for a very competitive Women Super50 championship which at the end will ensure that unlike their male counterparts, the women will be prepared to continue to match their skills with the best and be among the best in the world.

Merissa Aguillieira and Shaquana Quintyne celebrate a wicket for the West Indies. The pair will be on opposite sides during the West Indies women’s championship which starts on Thursday

ME: DO YOU HAVE CLUB SODA?

Server: Umm, no. What’s club soda?

Me: Water with bubbles.

Server: Soda water?

Me: Yes, that’s right.

Server: Yes, we have that.

Me: May I have one with a lime twist?

Server: What’s that?

Me: Just put a wedge of lime on the rim of the glass.

Server: Oh, we don’t have any lime.

Me: Lemon?

Server: No, sorry.

Me (panting from thirst): Do you have coconut water?

Server: No, we don’t serve coconut water. We have fresh juices—tangerine, orange, pineapple…

Me: No coconut water? But there is a coconut vendor right around the corner.

Server: Cherry, grapefruit…

Me: Just a glass of water, please. And I will have the corn soup.

Server: Oh, the soup not ready yet.

Me (looking at watch which reads 11.45): Could you ask the kitchen when it will be ready. I really wanted soup today.

Server (returning after a few minutes): The chef says he doesn’t know.

Me (remembering there is never an excuse for rudeness): Let’s see, how about the fish?

Server: Actually, we are still on the breakfast menu.

Me (all etiquette lost through shock effect): Whaaaaat?

Server: And no fish today, sorry. Except codfish and bread, from the breakfast menu.

Me (squeaking in hunger): But it’s on the menu blackboard at the entrance.

Server: Oh, that was from yesterday.

Me: So it’s just there to torment hungry people?

Server (shouting to colleague): Glen-daaaaa! Rub off the board, please.

Me: So when does lunch begin?

Server: Well, I suppose…I eh really know but soon. Just now. Things kinda hectic today.

Me: Grrrrrr.

By the time I crawled down the steps of the bistro (an exaggerated and pompous application of the word) my eyes were salty orbs. Hunger was kicking me in the head, and I had difficulty forming compound sentences. I never got the glass of water, so the Excedrin remained in my sweaty palm.

Battle-worn as I am, having dined in restaurants; at lunch counters; and at roadside shacks on four continents and nearly every island in the English-speaking Caribbean, I still have not become used to the idea that ordering a meal can be a competitive sport requiring training in diplomacy and negotiation. Not to mention sheer stamina, of the degree acquired by astronauts and hostage retrieval experts.

Here is my so-hungry-I-could-faint lunch recipe which you can whip up even at your desk (not really but you can have your Martha Stewart fantasies). Never be caught again in the twilight zone of bad customer service when the noontime hours are  dangerously close and all you had for breakfast was a gulp of green tea.

You’ll need a small buttery zaboca (healthy fat which helps produce feeling of fullness), a dash of salt, sprinkle of black pepper, lettuce or baby spinach, lemon juice, drizzle of olive oil; chive and parsley seasoning; garam masala; chicken breast. Season the chicken breast, rub well with garam masala, coat with olive oil, and grill or bake; then shred. Toss with lettuce or baby spinach, olive oil, black pepper, and teaspoon of lemon juice (try pineapple juice for a sweeter less tangy effect). Add chunks of zaboca. Or you can try orange pegs or mango slices, provided your pancreas is working properly and you are not watching your blood sugar.

Optional: add crumbled Crix crackers for the crunch, which is a whole lot faster and simpler than croutons.

...the work of Maria Nunes
Published:
Monday, August 3, 2015

Maria Nunes claims to have left behind the world of history as a student and teacher but she has actually gone nowhere.

Five years into life as a full-fledged professional photographer, Nunes is generating through-the-lens first drafts of history via her work as a chronicler of contemporary performing arts and culture.

“When I began, I really did not know the direction (in which) my work would go,” the former champion golfer and sports news broadcaster confessed at a studio session last Tuesday. “I just knew I wanted to pursue this (but) very quickly, directions began to emerge.”

Such “directions” led Nunes, whose photos have appeared in the T&T Guardian, to the practice of documentary photography as a way of capturing and relating the stories of the people, places and things that come together as essential elements of Carnival, dance, theatre, the culture of pan and what she describes as “parang as a way of life.”

Her conversation with an audience of visual and performing artists, fellow photographers and other interested folk at Studio 30 in Woodbrook amounted to a discourse on the value of the discipline of history itself–its moral and ethical parameters and the requirement of truth.

“My photography is how I continue to live my love of history and to understand its relevance today—to continually investigate the questions that history poses,” Nunes said.

When asked if she was aware that in the end, not many people might pay attention to the stories being captured and told, Nunes responded with words to the effect that the telling of the stories of people and what they do was important. In a sense, history is important. Full stop.

Drawing from a variety of private professional and officially commissioned work, the Nunes collection exhibited at the session had, as a largely common concern, the transition of artforms such as the performance art of Carnival including the Blue Devil tradition, Moko Jumbies, stick-fighting and Jab Jab mas’, together with pan and the world of parang.

In all instances, people and their environments are captured in motion or in musical flight. “You can almost hear the music,” Nunes said of some photos. “You can see the movement.”

As photographer-in-residence for dancer/choreographer Makeda Thomas’s New Waves project, Nunes also travelled to Haiti where she confronted, head-on, the journalistic dilemma of the freedom to shoot against what some in the audience interpreted as the possibility that human photographic subjects in public spaces can be exploited.
