Many of the world’s most innovative and powerful tech companies are headquartered in Silicon Valley, the alias for the South Bay portion of the San Francisco Bay area of Northern California. These include Google, Apple, Facebook, Hewlett-Packard, Intel, e-bay and Yahoo. Stanford University and thousands of small start-ups are also located there. It is worthwhile to note that Stanford, its affiliates and graduates played a major role in the development of the Silicon Valley.
Bangalore is the capital city of the southern state of Karnataka in India and is called the Silicon Valley of India, despite it being located on a plateau. Some are of the view that Silicon Plateau would be a more appropriate alias. There is a concentration of firms specialising in Research and Development, electronics and software production. These include the Raman Research Institute, the Indian Space Research Organization, Central Power Research Institute and Infosys.
The Indian Institute of Science, a public university for scientific research and higher education is also located in Bengaluru (as Bangalore is now called). Wikipedia notes that it is regarded as India’s finest institution in its field, having made significant contributions to advanced computing, space and nuclear technologies.
