Mysterious roadworks in Cocorite

Published:
Wednesday, June 25, 2014

Just before the holiday period last week scraping of parts of the Western Main Road (WMR) around the Cocorite area took place. This has had the impact of traffic having to slow down as it entered the scraped strip, first at the start as one’s vehicle goes into a dip as the surface of road has been removed and then again when exiting the scraped strip as one enters the raised part of the road which has not yet been scraped.

The effect of this is that there is bumper to bumper traffic, presumably from as far back as Carenage. This adds another 15 minutes to the journey into Port-of-Spain before one clears the scraped strip.

There are no signs saying that repaving was being done so I don’t know if it is the Regional Corporation or Ministry of Works responsible for it. I speculate it may be the same people who are dealing with the widening of the Diego Martin Highway around Victoria Gardens. The traffic pile up started since Corpus Christi and continued over the holidays into the weekend and now into this week.

I note no efforts were made to advance the work over the holiday period. What is disturbing is that there are no signs of any equipment so the road was scraped by someone and they have disappeared and the public just left to take the jamming! I also question why is the WMR being repaved when there are roads in worse condition. Is this just to give a contractor wuk? Or is that part of the elections campaigning? Once more the public is being treated with contempt!
