Topics that Trinis understand. World No Tobacco Day is intended to encourage a 24-hour period of abstinence from all forms of tobacco consumption across the globe.
The day draws attention to the negative health effects of tobacco, which, annually, still causes about five million deaths worldwide. Nowadays, even though people still smoke, it’s become accepted, rather remarkably, that cigarette smoking is bad for your health and for your friends. Those who used the “choice” argument, “is my choice, my business, it have nuttin to do wit you, cigarette doh harm you, is my lungs, my heart, my throat, skin, you cah stop me, yuh farse an out of place, mind yuhself!” can no longer do so. Because, like sugar, nicotine is one of the most addictive substances known to mankind, so once hooked, there is no choice in the matter.
